How we decide what to cover, how we test it, and how we write about it.
1. Our Review Process
Every product we cover goes through the same evaluation framework, regardless of whether we physically tested it:
| Criteria | What we evaluate |
|---|---|
| Support & Spinal Alignment | Firmness consistency, how well the surface supports different sleep positions and body types, based on manufacturer specs, third-party lab data, and (when available) hands-on testing |
| Pressure Relief | Material response reported in verified owner reviews and, where tested, our own observation |
| Edge Support | Whether the mattress edge compresses significantly under weight (tested or sourced from verified reviewer footage) |
| Temperature Regulation | Cover and foam material properties, cross-referenced against verified owner feedback on heat retention |
| Motion Isolation | Relevant for couples; sourced from manufacturer construction data and verified reviews when not hands-on tested |
| Trial Period, Warranty & Returns | Verified directly against the current terms published on the brand’s own site at time of writing |
2. Content Labeling β Our Two-Tier Transparency System
Because we don’t yet have the resources to physically test every mattress on the market, every review on Bedroom Serenity Lab carries one of two labels, shown clearly at the top of the article:
- ποΈ Hands-On Tested β A member of our team or a vetted contributor received and physically tested this product. Original photos and/or video are included.
- π Researched Review β This review is compiled from verified third-party sources: independent lab certifications, published test data from recognized testing organizations, and patterns identified across verified customer reviews (Amazon Verified Purchase, Trustpilot, retailer sites). We do not claim hands-on testing for these articles, and we say so explicitly in the article itself.
We believe telling you exactly how we know what we know is more useful β and more honest β than implying expertise we don’t have.
3. Sourcing & Citation Standards
- Health- or medical-adjacent claims (e.g., “a medium-firm mattress may help with lower back pain”) are always sourced to recognized authorities β such as the Sleep Foundation, Mayo Clinic, NIH/NIH-funded research, or peer-reviewed journals β with a link to the source.
- We do not present our own synthesis of health research as personal medical advice. Where the science is mixed or inconclusive, we say so.
- Product specifications are cross-checked directly against the manufacturer’s current published specs at time of writing, not copied from other review sites.
- Customer sentiment claims (“many owners report…”) are based on a review of a minimum of 25 verified purchase reviews per product, not cherry-picked quotes.
4. Editorial Independence
Our writers and editors do not have final say over which brands pay the highest commission β product coverage decisions are made based on consumer search demand and product relevance, tracked separately from affiliate revenue data. Ratings are not adjusted based on commission rate.
5. Corrections & Updates
Every article displays a “Last Updated” date. When pricing, materials, certifications, or company policies change, we update the relevant article and note significant changes in a visible revision note at the bottom of the piece.
6. Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure
Bedroom Serenity Lab participates in affiliate marketing programs, including Amazon Associates. This means we may earn a commission on purchases made through links on our site, at no additional cost to you. This is disclosed at the top of every article that contains affiliate links, in accordance with FTC guidelines. Full details are in our Advertising Disclosure.
